Interlaken, Jungfrau & Lauterbrunnen

Switzerland is a beautiful country but the price of food is over the top. Yesterday…

Switzerland is a beautiful country but the price of food is over the top. Yesterday we went to a local pub for a late lunch when we got here. Di had a small bottle of sparkling water and a bowl of soup I had a beer and a Potato Rosti with bacon and a fried egg on top the total came to $60 AUD. Needless to say we have re thought our eating habits while here. Had Subway for dinner tonight and finished off with a Sundae from McDonalds.

Anyway that has been our only complaint so far. Today we had a great day. We caught an early train heading for the Jungfraujoch (Top of Europe).

Top of Europe, Jungfrau

The Jungfraujoch – Top of Europe is the highlight of any Swiss holiday. The highest railway station in Europe is located 3,454 metres above sea level. The visitors gain access to a high-Alpine wonderland of  ice, snow and rock, which they  can admire from the viewing platforms on the  Aletsch Glacier.

The railway journey to the Jungfraujoch is an experience which leads through the Eiger and the Mönch. At the Eismeer and Eigerwand intermediate stations, visitors can enjoy the wonderful view. It takes about 3 hours each way from Interlakken and you have to change trains 3 times. There are two different routes you can take one through the ski area of Grindelwald which we did on the way up and one through the village of Lauterbrunnen more on that later. The views from up here are simply stunning. When we first arrived it was enshrouded in fog and we couldn’t see anything, but after 10 minutes the fog lifted to reveal a beautiful panorama. Here is a 360 degree video taken from the top.

On the way down we took the route that took us through Lauterbrunnen and stopped there for an hour or two.

Lauterbrunnen

This place is what you might think a village should look like when you go to Switzerland. I small valley between sheer cliffs on each side with waterfalls cascading over them. Cute little swiss houses everywhere.

There is a walk you can do that takes you behind one of the waterfalls. It is cut through the rock and well worth the trip even though it is quite a steep walk. You get great views looking back over the little town of Lauterbrunnen. Took this video from behind part of the waterfall, you can see the water droplets in the video, it looks like static.

We met some brothers who saw Di’s jw.org badge on her backpack as we walked by and chased after us in the street.

Some witnesses we met in Lauterbrunnen

They were from California and were in a French congregation there. He was French, she was American.

Great to see the bro’s from other countries.

Tomorrow is a travel day as we head to Dijon France.

  • Great video. Lots of different lanuages on top of the mountains up in the clouds. And yes you could see the water in the front of that most gorgeous view.

  • Great blogs. Love the little video clips and photos are great. I am pretending I am there!
    Stay safe in France.
